This morning has seen the triumphant return of Brooklyn rapper Joey Badass with the release of a new EP: The Light Pack.
Joey Badass has been away from music for the past two years but has stayed active in the scene.
2017 saw Joey’s last full project All American Bads$$, followed up with a collab project with long time Pro Era and Beast Coast affiliate Kirk Knight Gazzolina.
Last year also seen a new level of growth from the NY mc as he was once again on Beast Coast debut project Escape From New York and even saw him step into the television world when he played Inspectah Deck in Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga.
Now with new label Columbia Records, joey looks to make some noise with a 3 song EP that features artists such as Pusha T. As a lead single for the project, Joey
released a video to accompany the EP with a visual for ‘The Light’.
As the video begins a message from Joey stating that he took place in a voodoo ceremony in search of rebirth. His purpose was to inspire other African Americans to take back their power as did he. And to not be afraid of one's culture or history as its “their” job.
From there we see a group of traditional women and men who help Joey complete his ceremony and we see Joey take to the NewYork Streets.
We then see Joey’s best impersonation of Slick Rick daunting an all red suit with only his ice underneath.
With Lyrics like “This is mumble rap extermination/This is godly interpolation,” Joey is looking to ascend and take his career to another level with this EP. Just like he states during the record he has been gone for a while not only in the physical but in the mental, sharing that he now has his mojo back.
With The Light Pack’s run time only being eight minutes, hopefully fans will be able to hold themselves over until Joey's full length album is coming later on this year. Until then stream The Light Pack on all platforms and check out “The Light” on YouTube.
